Becas (Small grants) Programme:
For over 12 years, TReeS has offered small annual grants to Peruvian University students planning to undertake the field work element of their studies in Madre de Dios. Grants have usually been awarded to students to enable them to complete the project requirements of their undergraduate degree (bachiller or titulo), and occasionally to those studying for their Masters.
The studies supported have covered a wide range of interesting topics from pure biological inventory studies, to habitat function, to ecological relationships, to the impacts of human activities (ie.gold-mining) on the ecosystem, to indigenous culture, etc - please refer to the field and final reports for further details.
On average at least six grants have been offered per year, usually of up to $1,000. The quality of applications received from students attending University in Lima is usually high, while those from provincial universities often require some clarification. In the case of students applying from universities in Puerto Maldonado, the only location of universities in Madre de Dios, additional support is usually offered to try to ensure that their proposals are complete and workable. TReeS has established a close link with the National University of Madre de Dios (UNAMAD) to try to encourage more applications from Madre de Dios, including indigenous students.
From 2020, the small grants announcement calling for applications will be issued in August, with a closing date in October and awards announced before the end of the year. This will allow students to receive their grants early in the New Year which will allow them to undertake their fieldwork during the long Summer holiday (January – March), should they wish to do so..
